Trainer Tony Gollan says you wouldn’t come across a more natural two-year-old than Pembrey (Prague) and is more than happy to throw her hat in the ring for a Golden Slipper start when she makes her Sydney debut at Randwick on Saturday.

And she will have to win the Group 2 $300,000 Sintoro Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m), to encourage connections to pay the $150,000 late entry fee with the filly not nominated for next month’s two-year-old classic.

It’s not a big surprise either as Pembrey was passed in when she didn’t make $20,000 as a yearling with Gollan suspecting that’s largely due to her somewhat plain appearance.

Gollan said on Sky Sports Radio what she may lack in size she’s making up for in other ways as evidenced by her runaway win at Eagle Farm two weeks ago.

“She’s nothing flash to look at, that’s why she didn’t make 20 grand, she’s not a big filly,’’ Gollan said.

“She’s small to medium size but has a bit of length about her. She was quite backward when she came in as a yearling and she’s just progressed and progressed.

“She’s just a real racehorse, she’s a real two-year-old, she licks the bin out and just does what you want.

“She handles everything really well and goes about her business like a much older horse. That’s what the good two-year-olds do, they act more like three and four-year-olds.”

Three years ago Gollan sent his Magic Millions winning filly Skirt The Law to the Sweet Embrace, she started $2.05 and ran seventh behind Lazzura so didn’t press on to the Slipper.

Pembrey is a $15 chance in TAB’s Golden Slipper betting in a market that’s ever changing as new horses come onto the scene and others fall away.

Gollan secured James McDonald to ride the filly, $2.40 with TAB on Wednesday, who led all the way to a 5-1/2 length debut win over 1000m in deteriorating conditions so if a wet track happens to present at Randwick the trainer said it shouldn’t faze her.

“Even though it was only a 6 and it was downgraded to a seven (Ben Thompson) felt it rode wetter than it was,’’ he said.

“She’ll definitely handle wet ground and 1200m shouldn’t be an issue at all. It’s whether she’s good enough now.

“It’s great to have (James) on board, he’s a good bloke and obviously a very good rider, but we’ll wait and see what she does now and whether she measures up to the Sydney standard.

“It’s a big jump from the horses she’s racing (at home) but she couldn’t have been any more impressive and she’s certainly trained on, there’s been no dramas with her over the last fortnight.

“She’s the real deal as far as a two-year-old goes. She works, she eats, she moves freely and soundly and there’s no fuss and no worries with her.”

In contrast, Gollan said he wouldn’t want to see any worse than a soft 6 track for Zarastro to take his place in the Group 3 $250,000 HKJC World Pool Liverpool City Cup (1300m).

The seven-year-old hasn’t raced since he ran third behind Willaidow after leading in the JRA Plate (1200m) at Rosehill four weeks ago and Gollan has long said he likes to space his runs.

Pedigree info: Pembrey is out of the G2 Edward Manifold Stakes winner Se Sauver (Bel Esprit), who has produced nine runners to race for eight winners, with the best of them being the three-time winner Amplify (Microphone) who has also placed in the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet.

Se Sauver is well-related being a half-sister to the Matt Laurie-trained G1 South Australian Derby winner Escado (Casino Prince), who was also successful in another two Group 3 staying races.
